The website says CaseRelief uploads nothing. That's easy to say, so this is what's behind it.
CaseRelief is a desktop program. Connecting your account, importing a file, reading attachments, reading scans, building exhibits, all of it happens on your computer. I don't have a server that sees your email and I don't want one. Even the screen that shows your evidence file doesn't reach out to anything online.
Emails themselves are shown as plain text, and pictures in them never load from the internet, which I went into last week.
It only ever reads. With Outlook, Microsoft's permission screen just says "Read your mail". Gmail, iCloud and Yahoo are opened read-only as well. CaseRelief never sends, moves or deletes anything, and it doesn't even mark your mail as read.
Saved passwords and sign-ins stay on your computer, locked to your Windows account.
If you activate Pro, the app checks your license with my server. That check sends the license key, an anonymous code for the device, your computer's name and the app version. The computer name is there so you can tell your devices apart, so if you named your computer after yourself, that name goes too. Nothing else. No email, attachments, evidence files or scanned text, ever. The update check only sends the app version, the free version never needs a connection to work, and the website has no cookies and no analytics.
The privacy policy went up today too. My favourite part is the bit about legal demands for data. If anyone ever compels me, the most they can get is the license info I keep: your email address, order details, the device code, your computer's name and when you activated. I can't hand over your emails or your evidence files or your exhibits because I've never had them.
